My sister Haley and I (in dream) had two close childhood friends, nameless brothers near to our ages. I am now twenty and she is seventeen. We were reminiscing on our young friendships with the brothers, games we played, and wonders we talked of.
Haley told me in an off-handed way that she suffered some memory loss from around the time she was six until ten. Not the entire span of that time but lost afternoons, and foggy memories. I began to remember times that Haley and the boy her age would disappear, and we'd play separately. I thought nothing of it in the past but it now seemed inherently important. We began to wonder...
Out of curiosity, and these boys being off on a summer vacation we decided to snoop around their shared bedroom whilst they were away. A stretch I know, but we sensed something was askew and either way would have welcomed any excuse to do so. Who isn't interested in the secrets of others?..right?
We let ourselves into their home using the key hidden obviously inside the belly of a stone frog beside the door. We'd seen the boys use it many a time before but we wouldn't spend much time looking otherwise. We climbed the stairs, tiptoed down the hall and opened the door facing us at the end.
Starting with bureau drawers was another obvious choice, as most tend to hide away their things amongst their socks or other clothing. I took my boy's and Haley took hers. I looked over at her seconds later, as she'd paused, cupped in her hands was a velvet pouch. She looked over it with familiarity and then up at me, terror in her eyes.
I crept over, took the pouch from her hands and emptied it's contents into mine. Out fell a mass of cracked bloody teeth. And I can't even describe the sheer HORROR we were both experienced when we realized what these were and what had really happened...
These, were Haley's baby teeth. And our childhood friends were NOT our friends, they were more perverse than we ever could have thought. As we both silently put together the pieces of Haley's instances of memory loss, I awoke.
And all day long Haley and I have both cringed and laughed at the thought of such a nightmare.
